Learning to love selflessly – what the Bible teaches you and why you need to do it with absolute consistency
True love is selfless and generous. Bible teaches us to love one another and encourages them to develop the readiness of giving of the self for others. But we should be happy while giving selfless love, not feel forced or sad in doing so. God loves all of us and wants to see us love others in a way similar to how He loves them. And that’s why He loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7 NIV). It was God’s selfless love toward mankind that made Him offer up His Son – Lord Jesus, for humanity’s salvation (John 3:16).
Just like God’s love is unconditional and unselfish, humans too should learn to love selflessly. This involves being respectful toward other people in terms of language, thoughts, or time. One should remember that selfless acts of love aren’t self-seeking and don’t dishonor others or get easily angered (1 Corinthians 13:5 NIV). Though it’s easy to love a child, spouse, or friend, true love involves loving all – from the enemy to the unlovable. And though it can be difficult to love those who have hurt us, that’s an integral part of practicing selflessness.
It’s human nature to act selfishly. We have to abide constantly in God because it’s He who will transform the person from the inside to mold their behavior into being unselfish. Apostle Paul realized this and acted accordingly (Galatians 2:20). One should remember that learning to love selflessly would be possible only through His guidance.
